Aloe Vera Propagation

Hello again! How have you been enjoying the spring weather? I love it!

I just wanted to share a quick easy project with you. My Aloe Vera plant had a baby growing from it so I decided to separate it and make it into it's own plant.

Here it is in a terracotta pot I painted.

This is just showing the little baby I removed from the main plant. It doesn't have much for roots. There are only 2 tiny roots growing from the bottom, so I'm hoping it will survive the separation.

I painted the top of the pot black and the bottom white.

I decided to add a cutesy aloe vera quote with sharpie.

Propagation is such a great way to increase your plant count. It's always rewarding to grow a whole new plant!

A fun tidbit, when I decided I wanted to keep houseplants in our home, this Aloe Vera is the first plant I bought. My girls and I named it Charlie. 

I now have over 40 plants and I love them all!

Wood Slice Wreath

I felt inspired this morning to do another crafty project so I decided to make a cute little neutral spring wreath. 

Here we go!

I cut a log into approximately quarter inch slices. I didn't measure, I just 'eye-balled' it which went super fast.

Next, arrange the slices into an overlapping circle and hot glue them together.

I used a protective top coat to seal the wood. I don't know if this step is necessary, but I had the product already on hand so I figured I would do it to keep the wood protected.

I made some paper flowers and gathered some other dollar store flowers and greenery that I had in my craft supply.

Arrange the greenery and flowers how you want them on the wreath and hot glue them down.

Here is a close up shot. I love how it turned out!

Christmas Decorating

Hello! It's been awhile! I feel a little bad that my blog has fallen to the wayside. I've been so focused on my Instagram account that I havn't put much effort into the blog. So I decided I would share some photos from my Instagram account (@addicted.to.turquoise) of my Christmas decor.  

This is my first year having a nativity set out! I had been wanting one for years but had a hard time finding one I really liked. Last year for Christmas I received this one as a gift! I am so happy to have it on display this year!

My favorite thing to decorate is my banister. It is so simple to wrap a garland around it, but it makes a big impact and adds so much charm!

Hanging a wreath on a mirror is also a super simple way to make an impact with holiday decor!

I love banners and garlands of all kinds. I decided to hang this 'MERRY' banner in an untraditional spot to keep with the eclectic vibes I have going in this area.

This little wreath is a simple DIY I made for my pantry door. I just wrapped a skinny berry Garland around the wreath form for an extra festive touch in my kitchen.

Here is a full view of my kitchen. I have a small tree on top of the cupboards, a WISH sign, the wreath I made and my Christmas mugs on display on the island.

My centerpiece and pillow covers all came from the DOLLARAMA. I love to keep things budget friendly when decorating seasonally.

This little bell garland is super cute and also from the dollar store. 

I haven't taken any photos of my outside decor yet. December is going by so fast, I can't believe its half over already!

Ficus Benjamina Adventures Part 3

I'm very pleased to report that 2 out of my 3 cuttings rooted successully in soil!

I realized it had been almost 11 months since I took my cuttings and thought I should do an update. Here they are.

They are healthy and growing new leaves. I'm

 Sure it will take a few years for them to get big enough to resemble trees but they look pretty cute being this little too. I gave one away and kept this little guy.

I decided to experiment with two of my other plants. I took a cutting or my string of pearls succulent and 2 cuttings of my maidenhair vine. I'm hoping they will root in water as well. I really like the look of these 2 plants and would love to have more of them displayed in my house!

Keep your fingers crossed for me that they grow roots!

Birthdays on a Budget

Our baby just celebrated her 2nd birthday and it got me thinking about how big birthday celebrations have become. People spend hundreds of dollars on birthday parties, and if you can afford that, all the power to you! But I think we need to take the pressure off ourselves to put on such elaborate birthday parties. I remember growing up with modest parties but I never felt I lacked anything. I would have a few friends over and we would play games. Mom always made poutine for us at our parties. We'd eat cake and open presents. It was a great time.

So I wanted to write a little post about throwing a birthday party on a budget. Here are a few tips...

Have the party at your home. Renting facilities to hold your party is a really big cost. I know having a bunch of kids in your home can feel overwhelming, thinking about all the cleaning you'll have to do after. But a lot of facilities require you to clean up after your party anyways. If you're worried about not having a large enough space at home to accommodate all your guests, think about downsizing the invite list. If you are anything like me, you are already overwhelmed with all the stuff your kids have, do they really need so much more? They aren't going to suffer from fewer presents. And if they have a set number of friends they can invite, it really gets them to consider who they value spending their time with.

My next tip is picking a theme for decorating. Going with a color theme is cheaper than picking a novelty theme like a cartoon or video game. Some of the main stream kid shows are easy to find decorations for but other themes require special orders for party supplies. Going with a color is simple and allows you to easily find decorations and supplies. Or you can make your own! The banner, garland, plates and party hats I used for my daughter's party all came from the dollar store. It cost me a total of $5!! 

Tip number 3! Make your own cake instead or ordering one! There are so many ideas on Pinterest for you to choose from. This tip also works really well when you follow my theme suggestion of working with a color. A simple 2 tier round cake is always classy, and its super easy to frost it with the color of your party theme!

Don't get me wrong, some birthdays are milestone numbers and I think it's 

 Ok to go all out once in awhile, but I don't think it's necessary for every party, every year.

It doesn't take much to make our children feel special. I truly think all the fancy decorations are really more impressive for the adults, the kids rarely notice that stuff. Keep it simple and take the pressure off your self, and off your wallet!

My latest projects

Hello again! We've had a busy summer so I haven't had the time to write a blog post for awhile. I thought I would share my last couple projects I built.

I've really been liking the look of old corbels used in home decor. Either as book ends or just placed on a shelf. Even for their intended use of holding up a shelf. I decided I'd love to use some architectural salvage pieces in our home, but it is very impractical to think I could take my little kids to auctions and antique stores to hunt for the perfect pieces. So I built my own!

After I painted them I chipped off some of the paint to make them look a little aged. I love how they turned out, but I think I'll try distressing them a little more. They still look a little bit too new to me.

I decided to put them on my entrance way shelf for now.

I also made a wood sign for a friend's birthday present. We've always exchanged gifts on our birthdays which I think is kind of fun. Usually as you get older you don't get birthday gifts, unless from immediate family. So it's nice to be blessed from a friend each year on your birthday. 

I let her know I wanted to make her a sign so I could get her preference on what she wanted it to say, depending on where she would put it. She picked the saying " Home Sweet Home" with a wreath around it. I love the way it turned out!

Now I am currently working on a blanket ladder for myself. I'm finding I've been procrastinating on my projects. I start them and wait forever to do the next step. So I'm not sure when it will be done. Fingers crossed for this week!

Working vacation.

A couple weeks ago, the kids and I joined my husband on a work trip. He had to be away for 4 days and since school was over, we drove up separately and stayed with him. 

We were able to check out The Phillip J. Currie Dinosaur Museum. Here are some pictures I took of the museum.

The kids really enjoyed it and it was a fun family outing!
